The History Of Victoria, Australia

Victoria began in the 1700’s after New South Wales divided into two different colonies and Victoria was named after Queen Victoria who was the monarch at this time. The first settlement of people was established in 1803 and consisted of convicts, marines, civil officers and a missionary and his wife. These people came from England and were sent to ensure that the French could not make claim to the area. In 1851 gold was found at many sites across Victoria and the area became very popular it triggered one of the biggest gold rushes that were ever experienced. The population grew rapidly and within 10 years it grew from 76,000 to 540,000 which saw the state become over populated.
