What kind of electronics can I use on an airplane?

When the flight attendant say, "You may now use your electronics," what kind of electronics can I use? Can I use a phone? If I had an iPhone, could I be able to use the internet or something? And why aren’t you allowed to use electronics sometimes when you fly on a plane anyway?

Item Carry-on/Checked

Camcorders (See below) Yes / Yes

Camera Equipment – the checked baggage screening equipment will damage undeveloped film in camera equipment. We recommend that you either put undeveloped film and cameras containing undeveloped film in your carry-on baggage or take undeveloped film with you to the checkpoint and ask the screener to conduct a hand inspection. (See below) Yes / Yes

Laptop Computers (See below) Yes / Yes

Mobile Phones (See below) Yes / Yes

Pagers (See below) Yes / Yes

Personal Data Assistants(PDA’s)(below) Yes / Yes

NOTE: We recommend keeping fragile or expensive items with you in your carry-on bags

NOTE: Check with your airline or travel agent for restrictions on the use of these and other electronic items during your flight.

Well, you are allowed to use electronics like gaming systems, and ipods/ mp3 players. You cannot however ever use phones because they interfere with the pilot’s connection to the air traffic control tower.

I’ve used cell phones, iPod nanos, the PSP, as long as they say it is okay by the captain.

Electronic devices may interfere with radio/ radar transmissions, so best to leave it off until it is "OK".

You don’t want a body cavity search by the Dept. of Homeland Security, do you??? :D

The only time you aren’t allowed to use them is when the plane takes off and when it lands because it can interfere some electronic device inside the plane.

Have you ever recieved a call on your cellphone, and heard distortion from your computer speakers? In the same way, wireless equipment like Bluetooth earpeices, wireless internet cards, and cell phones can cause disruption to aviation electronics.

As to WHICH electronics, this is likely to vary by airline, but for the most part the rule is meant to prevent interference by cell phones and laptops with wireless network cards, along with other wireless devices.
