Caller ID is not a matter of electronic components, but rather a function of the software in the Central Office switch. The caller ID information is sent over the phone line by the switch in digital form and captured for display by the caller ID box connected to the line at the station.
You could make arrangements for the information to come in as a text stream to a modem and save it on your computer, but the telephone service provider would have to be willing to work with you. It is possible such a service is now available in some places.
The problem with getting information about how these things work is that for security reasons the communications companies are rather secretive about their operations. You might find something by doing an internet search on "caller id," or you might try the library at an engineering school.
