Can a surge pass through low-level input/outputs to other electronics components?

I am out of outlets on the surge protector for my computer equipment. I really don’t care about my speakers; I have spares. I am concerned, however, that a surge could originate from the unprotected outlet to the speaker system, and pass through the audio cable and through the mini-jack to the computer.

I know that surges can pass through coax cables and telephone line (in addition to, of course, power cables.

Will connecting my speakers in the above manner endanger my computer and peripherals?

If at all possible, a link so I can do more research would be helpful.

Yes, anything is possible, since electricity always takes the path of least resistance, but it isn’t very likely. Besides, why wouldn’t you just go to Wal-Mart and buy one of those $3 single-outlet surge protectors for your speakers?
