How do electronic odometers hold their numbers through battery being removed and other power disconnections?

This is not a question about whether mine is accurate, not a question about how to repair one, and it’s not a question about whether to trust car dealers and garages. It’s just a curiosity question which is what it is, basically: Why doesn’t the electronic odometer blank off and lose it’s number when the current is disconnected or dies on a car?

Thank you.

Like a read only memory chip has to be calibrated when spedo is replaced and with out special knowledge most new spedometer odometers are tamper resistant. And the memory does not erase even with out 12v power.

I believe they have a memory chip built in.

It’s bec electronic circuits or the computers have circuits that use a mini battery that saves currents , that it sends to the micro processor. These currents are varied and each current is actually telling the display what number to display , therefore the time is constant or a gauge can have the stored current when needed.

it has it’s own internal battery like regular computer systems

That information is normally stored in the onboard engine computer, along with other important information. The computer has a small ram, just like the computer you’re reading this on.It’s kept alive indefinitely by a capacitor.
